As my college just announced yesterday, I’ll be taking on a slightly different role at Georgia Tech. You can read the full release, but the relevant bits are as follows:

  • I have been named Ivan Allen College Distinguished Chair in Media Studies
  • I am also now jointly appointed in the School of Interactive Computing in the College of Computing
  • I am starting up a Center for Media Studies at the Institute

There’s not much detail to report about the last item yet, but the Center will both include digital and computational media and extend beyond the computer to cover media in the most general sense. If you’re reading this blog post, you’ll probably note my ongoing affinity with Marshall McLuhan and my interest in object-oriented ontology, and thus imagine that “media” might include airports and toasters as much as film and television. You’d be right.

In addition—and just to affirm that I’m not giving up on games in the slightest—the Center will also include a new games-related initiative that I’m not quite ready to say much about. Stay tuned for more news on that front.
